Funding secured for carnival and 10k race

-

ORGANISERS of Lindley Carnival are jubilant after securing funding for this year’s event.

The carnival and community 10k run has been given the goahead after Kirklees Council granted a funding request.

This year’s event, which will take place in June, will mark 10 years of the carnival since it was introduced in 2006.

Lindley Community Group applied for £5,200 funding from Kirklees’ District Area Committee for the event, which is likely to cost nearly £9,000 overall.

The event includes a fairground, climbing walls, stalls and activities and typically attracts 1,000 people.

Local school choirs will be singing at the carnival this year, with the theme being the celebration of local musical talent and marking Armed Forces Day, which falls on the same day of Saturday, June 25.

The Lindley 10k community run follows the next day, starting at Lidget Street near Lindley Library.

Clr Cahal Burke, Liberal Democrat councillor for Lindley ward and chairman of Lindley Community Group, said: “I’m delighted that funding has been secured, and I’m sure it will again be a fantastic weekend of community events.

“The carnival and the Lindley 10k race are always popular. The aim is to have a full programme of events in Lindley, with something on offer to everyone.

“It’s a real fun weekend, particularly for young people and families, and shows that people in Lindley care about their community.”
