WOODSOME HALL professional Chris Hanson claimed a share of 11th place in the European Tour’s opening tournament of the season in South Africa.

Hanson, who had reached the cut in joint second place, suffered in a testing final round as he slipped down the leaderboard at the Alfred Dunhill Championship.

The 31-year-old, who had scored a 69 and a 65 to be 10 under after two rounds, had put himself in a good position going in the final round at the Leopard Creek Country Club.

A third-round 68, containing eight birdies but four dropped shots, left him 14 under and with a chance of a charge at one of the top places.

However, that unravelled in the opening four holes of the final round with a double-bogey on the par five second hole and then another dropped shot at the fourth.

He was four over for the round at the turn as he dropped another shot at the par four ninth.

And that was how it was to stay for the day as Hanson returned to the clubhouse four over, with birdies on then 10th, 13th and 15th matched by dropped shots on 14, 16 and the final hole.

However, at 10 under for the championship Hanson could be happy with a strong start to the season that for one fleeting moment in the second round saw him level at the top of the leaderboard with last year’s tournament champion Charl Schwartzel.

It was Brandon Stone who started the new European Tour season on a high as he cruised to a seven-shot victory.

Home favourite Stone, who began 2016 with a win at the BMW SA Open in January, produced a closing 67 to finish on 22 under par.

Fellow South African Richard Sterne – a former winner of this event – finished alone in second on 15 under after posting a flawless 67 in his final round.

Schwartzel held a share of the lead early on in the final round after making a strong start, but a triple bogey at the 15th and a double at the 16th saw him finish in a share of fourth on 12 under.
