Unbeaten start to promotion bid for Field

HUDDERSFIE­LD Rugby Union Club are undefeated so far this season as they bid to make an immediate return to National II North level.

Gareth Lewis’s Lockwood Park side were relegated to III but are currently leading the pack by 10 points and posting impressive stats in pretty much every match.

Former Huddersfie­ld Giants player Elliot Hodgson is leading the way in tryscoring, crossing for 21 so far, while Yorkshire’s Chris Bell is helping with a phenomenal kicking record.

So far, Huddersfie­ld have scored a league best 672 points in 15 league games, while conceding just 135.

Up at Laund Hill, YMCA are getting establishe­d back in North I East after also being relegated last season, from National III North. YM are ninth of 14 teams so far. Golfer Chris Hanson retained his Tour Card after an excellent first year as a full European Tour profession­al.

The 31-year-old from Woodsome Hall qualified the previous year through the Tour Qualifying School in Spain but retained his placing, and improved his category, with some solid play through the season.

He has now been joined on Tour by Marcus Armitage of Howley Hall, who lives in Skelmantho­rpe.

He qualified from the Challenge Tour rankings.

And Meltham’s Jamie Bower has turned profession­al after massive progress in the amateur ranks and starting the year superbly in South Africa.

The 23-year-old has joined Georgia Golf and, in addition to the EuroPro Tour, will play at least seven times on the Challenge Tour in 2017.

It’s a fantastic career step for the world-ranked No12 amateur and Brabazon champion, who is taught by England Tour coach Alan Thompson.

Huddersfie­ld darts star Scott Waites notched his second BDO World Darts Championsh­ip at Frimley Lakeside Country Club.

Entering the 2016 World Championsh­ip as the ninth seed, Waites won his second World Championsh­ip by beating Canada’s Jeff Smith 7-1 in the final – to add to his success in 2013.

In football’s West Riding County Amateur League there were doubles for Huddersfie­ld YMCA, who won the Premier Division title and cup, and Newsome FC, who won Division One and the cup competitio­n.

In the Huddersfie­ld District League Hepworth United were the Division One champions.

In the Huddersfie­ld FA competitio­ns the Challenge Cup was won by Huddersfie­ld YMCA, who beat Golcar 1-0 in the final, and the Challenge Trophy was won by Shelley Reserves.

The Barlow Cup went to Heyside, the Groom Cup winners were Colne Valley, Hepworth United Reserves won the Richardson Cup and the Gee Cup was won by Linthwaite Athletic Reserves.
