Victim left fighting for life

-

A MAN is in hospital with lifethreatening injuries after he was badly hurt in an alleged attack. The 35-year-old was found bleeding heavily from head injuries when police were called to a ground-floor flat on St John’s Road in Birkby at 4.20pm on New Year’s Day. Two people were also in the flat and were arrested. Two more people walked into Dewsbury police station a short while later and they too were arrested. All were detained on suspicion of assault and remain in custody. The flat is near the junction with Blacker Road.

Det Insp Stef Wiseman (inset left), from Kirklees CID, said: “The man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he underwent surgery on Sunday night and is now in an induced coma. He has life-threatening head injuries.”

The two people arrested at the scene are a man aged 46 and a woman who is 46.

The two detained at Dewsbury police station are a 45-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman.

All four who were arrested are Hungarian and the victim is also Hungarian.

Monika Tomczyk, 30, who lives above him in a flat, said the landlord of the property called her and told her what happened.

She said: “I said: ‘oh, my God.’ The landlord said the police might want to speak to me. I was quite shocked when I heard what had happened. No-one deserves that. I didn’t know him well but he had been living here for three or four months. I knew him slightly because I had to use his door to put my rubbish out.

“He could speak English but I don’t know what he did.”

A man who also knew him said: “He was a nice enough chap. I think he worked as a window fitter. I saw him a couple of days ago. He said he had a child in Hungary.”

Det Insp Wiseman added: “We are at an early stage in the inquiry and would appeal for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area to contact us as a matter of urgency.”
