Super Premier land medal haul

-

SKELMANTHORPE golfer Marcus Armitage finished three under par in the Tshwane Open in South Africa.

The 29-year-old European Tour rookie from Howley Hall picked up 5,635 euros in Tied 45th position in Pretoria.

Armitage had rounds of 68, 72, 73 and 68 after making the cut alongside Woodsome Hall’s Chris Hanson.

Hanson finished on one under par after rounds of 68, 71, 72 and 72 to collect 3,057 euros.

South Africa’s Dean Burmester stormed to his first European Tour title in the event as overnight joint leader Scott Jamieson suffered a nightmare final day.

Burmester carded a second consecutive 65 at Pretoria Country Club to finish 18 under par, three clear of both Finland’s Mikko Korhonen and Spain’s Jorge Campillo.

The 27-year-old began the final round a shot behind Jamieson and Sweden’s Alexander Bjork, but surged to the top of the leaderboard with birdies on the first three holes and added three more on the front nine to reach the turn in 29.

Further birdies on the 10th, 12th and 14th meant the result was never in doubt and Burmester could afford the luxury of dropping shots on the 16th and 17th before sealing victory with a par on the last.

The win will move Burmester back into the world’s top 100 when the rankings are updated today – and it also means South African players have won four of the five editions of the Tshwane Open.

“I can’t believe it,” said Burmester, who finished 11th in last week’s Joburg Open after starting the final round one shot off the lead. “I’ve had an amazing summer.” PREMIER Taekwondo, under Master Mosy, took another mass of medals in the Scorpion 1-2-1 event at Barnsley Metrodome.

The teams showed they mean business this year with 14 golds and 13 silvers. Camran Hassan started the competition with a convincing 23-11 win, collecting the first gold of the event.

Quickly following were impressive wins from Chloe Cunliffe (14-5) and Eric Kacica, who won with a superb back leg knockout.

The medal tally was increased with two outstanding performances from Kairan Bradshaw, grabbing himself two gold medals (28-12 and 17-6), as well as Nicholas Kacica bagging himself a gold and silver (26-11 and 11-18).

Kyla Julien showed why she is the current British champion with a masterclass win, ending the final 48-2.

Unfortunately, fellow British champion Jayden Elson narrowly missed out on gold in a close fight in which he took an early lead but lost in the last seconds to a body shot, ending 9-7.

Owen Wraight also showed a winning performance but, despite his lastgasp attack, the buzzer went and he lost by just two points 16-14.

The fighter of the day honour went to James Maxted, who put in an excellent performance and perfect fight plan to win 15-7.

Other gold medalists included Xavier Kacica (0-19), Danya Serry (19-7), Gary Haigh (26-17), Niamh Ryan (8-4), Parham Pishvaei (31-18) and Peter Marth (12-7).

Silver medals were won by Balpreet Aujla (4-3), Jamie Mcintosh (4-13), Jamila Siddique (36-15), Tyler Doherty (14-39), Callum Horn (17-20), Evie Laycock (8-14), Hamzeh Ramezani (1019), Harry Chadderton (17-3), Jack Chardderton (0-6), Matilda Thapa (1737).

Premier head coach Master Mosy said: “I was happy with everyone’s effort and no-one should be disappointed.

“There are a lot of positive things to come from the competition which will only help the squad improve moving forward, which myself and Master Mojy can work on.”

Now the team are training hard and focusing on their next goal, the Ultimate Open on March 26, which is a seeding competition for the National Championships.
