Muir wins dream double gold
BRITAIN’S Laura Muir completed her dream double after claiming gold in the 3,000 metres at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade.
Muir, 23, gained her second gold of the championships with victory in the 3,000m yesterday following her 1,500m win the previous day.
The Scot eased away from the rest of the field to break the championship record in eight minutes 35.68 seconds.
GB teammate Asha Philip, 26, set a new British record to win the women’s 60m final in a time of 7.06 seconds.
“I was not doubting myself,” Philip said. “I knew I had it in me and the confidence took me through the race.
“When I crossed the line, I could feel the girls on my left and I wasn’t sure – the camera came to me and I was like: ‘I don’t believe it unless you say my name.’”
Elsewhere, Briton Shelayna Oskan-Clarke was edged into silver by winner Selina Buchel of Switzerland in a thrilling women’s 800m final.
Robbie Grabarz took silver in the men’s high jump after losing a jump-off for gold against Sylwester Bednarek of Poland.
Muir and Richard Kilty had also made it a golden Saturday for Great Britain.
Muir completed the first part of her double mission by clocking a championship record, British record and personal best of four minutes 2.39 seconds in the 1,500m to secure her first major crown.
Kilty then ran 6.54secs to defend his men’s 60m title after a tense beginning which had seen teammate Andrew Robertson disqualified for a false start.
