Gladiators put on an impressive show

-

HUDDERSFIELD Gladiators won 10 of 14 bouts in a hugely successful show they hosted.

Top opposition came from Manchester’s Moss Side, North Road Liverpool and the famous Ingle Academy in Sheffield – and the Gladiators also had three boxers in action at the Mercure Bankfield Hotel in Bradford.

Sandrino ‘El Terrible’ Mirga boxed a fighter from Camp Detox in Leeds, winning by unanimous decision to bring his record to three wins from three (all by unanimous decision). The talented Mirga looks one to watch in the future. Alex Dunka fought a Sheffield opponent who had twice his experience and was 2kg heavier, but the underdog fought like a true warrior and lost only by a controversial split decision.

He was overcome with emotion, losing his first bout in six – the others all being unanimous wins.

Luc Baskeyfield-Bride had a point to prove, having lost on his debut at the Henry Wharton show in York against a talented opponent by a split decision.

Baskeyfield-Bride, who won the GBA belt for bout of the night in his home show and suffered a broken nose in his last bout, won his first round, lost the second but dug deep to seal victory on a split decision.

This finished off what has been a great season for the Gladiators, with tw champions and winning 70% of their bouts.

Coach Den Doyle said: “Each and every young boxer fought with heart and soul, doing themselves, their families and Huddersfield proud.

“Bring on next season – and we would like to congratulate our club partners Huddersfield Town on there promotion. Team Huddersfield!”
