Ladies set to push for Premier status

-

DAVID McGoldrick is a doubt for the Republic of Ireland’s World Cup qualifier against Austria as he awaits the results of a scan on a knee problem.

The 29-year-old Ipswich striker sat out training as a precaution at Abbotstown on Tuesday morning, but manager Martin O’Neill was not optimistic when asked about his chances of making the squad for Sunday’s Group D clash at the Aviva Stadium. ■■Borussia Dortmund have appointed Ajax boss Peter Bosz as their new head coach.

The 53-year-old, who led Ajax to the Europa League final in his sole season in charge of the Amsterdammers, has signed a two-year deal to succeed Thomas Tuchel, who left the club last week following a rift with club bosses. ■■Steph Houghton is targeting Women’s Champions League success after extending her professional contract with Manchester City Women.

England captain Houghton joined City in 2014 and led the club to WSL and Women’s FA Cup success over the past 12 months.

The Durham-born 29-year-old also led City in their inaugural Women’s Champions League campaign which ended in a semi-final defeat to holders Lyon.

Houghton said: “The last three years with Manchester City Women have been unbelievable and I am delighted to commit my long-term future to the club.

“I am looking forward to working with the team next season to challenge for even more titles and hopefully make it even further in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.” AS Huddersfield Town prepare for life in the FA Premier league, Huddersfield Town Ladies are making preparations for their fourth season in the FA Women’s Premier league Northern Division. THE Ladies have the possibility of automatic promotion to the Women’s Super League should they enjoy a successful campaign.

The first team will kick-off their season on Sunday, August 20 – just one week after the men - and in preparation will be holding Open Age playing trials for the 2017/18 season on Wednesday and Thursday, June 14 and 15, at 6.45-9pm at Leeds Road Sports Complex (HD2 1YY) on their 3G pitch.

These trials are open to any girl aged 16 or over on September 1, 2017.

As well as the first team the club also run two other open age teams.

Their Development team plays in the FAWPL Reserve Division and their Academy team will be playing in Division One of the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women’s County League.
