THESE are some of the inventive ways Brits have tried to make their money go further on holiday.

Some of the most popular ideas included lying about their children’s ages, wearing extra clothes on flights to avoid excess baggage charges and making a sneaky lunch from the breakfast buffet.

Around one in eight parents also admitted to taking their children out of school in term time to avoid extortiona­te holiday time prices.

The research was carried out by Opinium for car hire insurance firm iCarhirein­surance.com.

The full list of the most popular penny pinching tips tried out by Brits is:

1. Weighing down hand luggage rather than the suitcase: Nearly a quarter of people have put heavy items in their hand luggage to avoid paying excess baggage charges.

2. Passing on the in-flight peanuts and refreshmen­ts: Nearly a third of travellers have taken a packed lunch on a flight to avoid buying the airline’s food.

3. Wearing extra clothes on the flight – even if it is 30 degrees: More than one in seven have worn clothes from their suitcase to avoid paying excess baggage charges.

4. Taking the kids out of school: More than one in eight parents have gone on holiday during term time, even though the children missed school.

5. Making a sneaky ham butty from the breakfast buffet: A third of us have taken food from the breakfast buffet for lunch.

6. ‘Remember you’re four today not five’: Ten per cent of parents have lied about a child’s age to get cheaper entry to an attraction.

7. Boozing on the balcony before going out: Around 30 per cent of people have drunk alcohol in their room before going out in the evening to save money buying it out.

8. Stocking up on drinks or ice cream from the local supermarke­t: Almost half of people have bought ice-cream or bottled water from a local supermarke­t instead of the more expensive, touristy small shops and kiosks.

9. Booking accommodat­ion with kitchen: More than a quarter of travellers now chose to book accommodat­ion with a kitchen to avoid eating out.

10. Taking freebies from the hotel room: Nearly half have taken freebies such as shampoo and conditione­r from the hotel room.
