Revived Honley Feast to take place this year

-

HONLEY Feast will be held again this year after the success of its revival in 2016.

The Holme Valley village was once famed for its feast, when every home opened its doors to offer cooked beef and pickled red cabbage, plus home brewed beer.

In its heyday in the 1800s a travelling menagerie of elephants, camels and horses used to arrive from Wombwell, with jesters, strolling players, singing, dancing, and children’s games keeping the crowds entertained.

Honley Business Association (HBA) revived the event last year which included go-kart building and time trial competitions plus a ‘Big Sing.’

Now a packed programme of events is planned for the 2017 Feast on Saturday, September 16 .

Adele Oxley, HBA chairman, said: “The Feast was a huge success last year, with more than 3,000 people coming along.

“The feedback we received was amazing.

“We really want to build on the success of last year and will be showcasing great local acts on stage, and quality local produce, gifts, and crafts on market stalls.

“There will be lots of activities for the kids to participate in, and plenty to eat and drink all day long.

“Once again, we will show what a great community spirit we have in Honley.”

The event will begin at 9.30am with a circus parade in Honley Park.

The festival will then move to Honley Cricket Club from 10am onwards where they will be live music entertainment and a vast array of market stalls, plus a fabulous vintage vehicle display.

A five-a-side football tournament and go-kart time trials will take place next door on the neighbouring Jaggar Lane recreation ground.

To enter a go-kart in the competition, book a stall, volunteer to help or if your business fancies taking part in the five-a-side football tournament get in touch with Honley Business Association secretary June Mclean, by calling into Zebra Jewellery & Gifts in the centre of Honley. Alternatively email junemacc@talk talk.net.

All proceeds raised are for the village of Honley and local community.
