He took th Under 18 mixed singles crown with a 21-7 victory over fellow scratch player James Hick of Almondury Lib, in the Brockholes BC final sponsored by Frank and Jean Wrathall.

Twenty six juniors took part in the 17th running of the popular school-holiday event.

As last year, the semi-finals and final were played in very wet conditions, but everyone soldiered on.

There were four groups of four and two groups of five. The winner of each group went through to the knockout stages, along with the runners-up in Group 5 and Group 6, to make the last eight finalists.

The last eight were, Leah Keyworth from Broad Oak off scratch, homester Billy Jakeman (scratch), Aidan Crawley from Marsh Lib (off 8), Heap, Hick, homester Callum Wadsworth (scratch), Cameron Ghaffar from Almondbury Lib (scratch) and Scott Shaw from Almondbury Lib (scratch).

The quarter finals were 13-up and young Crawley was up against six Yorkshire Junior County players and homester Jakeman to get to the final.

Despite playing well, he lost out 13-9 to Heap, while Jakeman beat Keyworth, Hick defeated Wadsworth and Ghaffar beat teammate Shaw.

Both semi-finals were close affairs but the weather took a hand in deciding who won.

Heap got the block at 12-6 down against Jakeman when the heavens opened, and he ran out a 15-12 winner.

Likewise, in the other semi, Hick got the block at a crucial stage against Ghaffar and coped with the conditions better to win 15-12.

Conditions remained bad for the finalists and referee Geoff Martin.

Both players matched each other in the first few ends, but as the conditions worsened, Heap took command and Hick had no answer to the long marks.

Junior Secretary Martin presented The Wrathall Trophy to Heap and thanked referee Norma Maxwell, everyone at Brockholes BC for helping out, the sponsors and the players for their sportsmanship.
