For Cup glory Quality champions

YOUNG Scott Singleton of Almondbury Lib and Joe Wiltshire from Penistone won the third running of the Harry Maxwell Memorial Adult and Junior Pairs Handicap.

The seven handicappers defeated Thomas Hirst (Almondbury Lib) and Wayne Hirst (Mirfield Old Bank), off three, 21-11 in the showpiece at Shepley BC to take away the £160 top prize.

The final – sponsored by Mrs Norma Maxwell in an event carrying total prizemoney of £320 – produced some outstanding bowling, but 2015 winner Wiltshire and new partner Singleton, played brilliantly and gained a seven-point lead at 14-7.

A run of four got young Thomas and father Wayne back in the game at 14-11.

But the Hirst family pairing could not match the consistency of Singleton, whose lead bowl was very near, and complemented with a good second as well.

He and Wiltshire – who won with father Rob two years ago – ran out for victory, becoming the best of 17 teams who turned up.

There were some very close matches in the first round, with four matches going to the wire.

Seven-year-old Aidan Crawley from Marsh Lib was the star of the first round, partnering his grandad Derek, and just losing out 21-20 to homesters Malcolm Gilbert and Connor Brown, after winning their pre-lim game 21-11.

An all-family affair between the Hick family went to young Ethan and his father Michael, beating his son James and father Harold, 21-19.

In the quarter-finals, nineyear-old Ethan Hick stole the show, and he and his father Michael beat fancied pairing Callum Wadsworth and Kieron Oprey 21-13.

The semi-finals saw two more juniors shine – 12-year-olds Singleton and Thomas Hirst both bowled brilliantly to reach the final.

Sponsor Norma Maxwell presented the prizes to the winners for this memorial, in honour of her late husband Harry.

Junior secretary Geoff Martin thanked Norma for her sponsorship and Shepley BC for hosting for a third year.

Geoff also commented that it was great to see three Under 12 players in the semi-finals, and playing so well.
