Badminton
sets of three generations of families taking part.
Grandfather, father and grandson Arthur, Lee and Dan Whitworth and grandfather, daughter, granddaughter and grandson – Alan Shaw, Amber Wood, LillyMae Wood and Morgan Wood – were on the courts.
The Mixed A final was a very tense affair with the Valley St James pair of Oliver Platt and Rachel Fay, playing off a handicap of +4, against the Holmfirth pair of Nick Weston and Lisa Pearson (off scratch).
The first end went comfortably in favour of Platt and Fay, 21-12, but the second end was extremely close with the Weston and Pearson taking this 21-20, despite some excellent defence from Platt and Fay.
The final game was more straightforward, with Platt and Fay eventually winning 21-12 and taking the title.
The Mixed B final featured the excellent juniors of Angela Xu and Tim Lee from Huddersfield Eagles on +3, taking on the pairing of Bev Wilson and John Mellor (scratch) of Kirkburton.
Mellor and Wilson took the first end 21-15 but then determination from the youngsters enabled them to take the second game 21-20.
The final game was won by Mellor and Wilson 21-15.
Rachel Fay featured again in the final of the Ladies A doubles with her partner Helen Calverley from Valley St James.
Despite giving a seven-point start on handicap to the pairing of Hannah Clarke and Charlotte Lyons of Kirkburton, the Valley pair were eventual winners, finishing 21-15 in the first end and then the Kirkburton pair pushing them all the way in the second game to the score 21-20.
The Ladies B doubles group final pitted the talented juniors Angela Xu and Louise Hutchinson from Huddersfield Eagles – who are both coached by Helen Calverley – taking on the mother and daughter pairing Amber and Lilly-Mae Wood.
Amber and Lilly-Mae, who started on a handicap of -2, took the first end against Angela and Louise (+3) 21-14.
