JOSH BROWN beat Michael Sweeney in the Spring Handicap final at Kirkheaton Con.

The host-club member took the title 21-19, making up for losing out in last year’s Summer Handicap showpiece.

Brown, who is in the Yorkshire away team against Staffordshire on Sunday, collected £100 for his win in the event, sponsored by Roebuck & Holmes Joinery and Shopfitting Contractors.

When it came to the crunch, Sweeney was laid up with two good bowls, but Brown – who reached a number of finals at the Griffin Bowling Club during the winter – bowled in with a “worldie” to grab the honours.

“It’s my first major and I’m buzzing,” said Brown, 23, an HGV driver from Farnley Tyas.

“To bowl on your own green can be a ‘lose, lose’ situation, simply because you are expected to win and do well, but it’s not easy on your own green when you are giving a start to county players, so it takes some doing.

“I’ve been going through a bit of a rough patch, too, so it was good to find a bit of form and I played fairly well all through.”

He beat Craig Gant to 17, Andrew Hoult to eight and then Kieran O’Prey to 14 to go through.

“It was nip and tuck against Craig,” he explained. “I got a bit of a start but then we were 16 across and 17 across before I managed to get away.

“I was reasonably comfortable against Andrew but then ended up Donald Booth, Andy Broughton, Donald Crowther (C), Malcolm Gilbert, Frank Griffin, Derek Hewitt, Harold Hick, John Hodgson, Peter Hopkinson, John Lindley, Dave Pollard and Roger Stopford.

Alan Bamforth, Jim Baxter, Kevin Brown, Mick Cox, Barry Gibson, Frank Greenwood (C), Eddie Haigh, John Hoyle, Peter Kain, Ronnie Manning and Roy Sutton.

All players note that the BCGBA dress code is mandatory and will be strictly applied. Any player incorrectly dressed will not be allowed to play.

Huddersfield Vets have thanked Thongsbridge BC for the use of their green and facilities. Spectators are welcome.
