Final: Brown 21 Sweeney 19. A REAL week for home teams in the Veterans 10-man League with 24 of the 29 games played going the way of the home side.

That included all seven matches played in Section 1, with Elland C&BC A leading the way with an 8-1 destructio­n of bottom team Brockholes A.

That reduced the gap to the leaders Lockwood Con, who beat Golcar Lib A 6-3 to make it four straight wins to start the season.

There was also an 8-1 home win for Clayton West as they became the last team in the Section to win a game this season – and that immediatel­y LINDLEY BC is the venue on Saturday (10am start) for the Yorkshire Girls and Boys Under 16 Merit preliminar­y. It’s a 9.45 scratch, with the draw greenside at 9.50.

On Sunday, it’s the Huddersfie­ld Girls Under 18 Handicap at Springwood Bowling Club, starting at 10am (scratching 9.45am, drawn 9.50).

Two new challenger­s have suddenly appeared, with New Mill A having two 9-0 wins in a week to move within one point of the leaders, and Rastrick also making a move from deep with an 8-1 mid-week win to go third (and a real threat for honours).

The Pilling Cup final will be at the same venue, with Spen Victoria A taking on Shipley Club.

In the West Riding semi-finals, Pudsey BC beat Crossgates BC by eight chalks after game was switched to Cleckheato­n Sports back green after Brighouse was deemed unplayable. Windmill 7-2.

Meltham B lost third position after losing 6-3 at Broad Oak A and two teams, Shepley and Primrose Hill Lib A, still await their first wins of the new campaign.

The big match in Section 3 between the top two went the way of the home team as Thorpe Green overwhelme­d Lockwood Con B 8-1 to take over at the top with a five-point lead, and they still have played a game fewer than their nearest challenger­s.

Holmfirth A had a good 6-3 win at Kirkheaton Con to go third, and 8-1 home wins for Golcar Lib B and Ravensknow­le Park A pushed them up into fourth and fifth places.

Section 4 remains the most open section.
