Great turnout for Stanley
CRICKET stars from across West Yorkshire convened at Armitage Bridge Cricket Club for the annual charity challenge match to remember the life of Stanley Inniss MBE.
The event was to raise money to help local children from disadvantaged backgrounds take up cricket.
One of the event organisers, Hugh Goulbourne, said: “This T20 game brought together the very best of cricket talent from across West Yorkshire, with a mix of homegrown players and overseas professionals.
“The event was a fantastic representation of Huddersfield’s hugely diverse and cohesive society and a great annual celebration of Caribbean cricket in Huddersfield.”
Rohan Abbott used to play with Stanley and was responsible for putting together the Huddersfield International Caribbean side.
He said: “Stanley did so much to bring people of all different backgrounds together to play cricket.
“Every one of the players who came could have been playing in other leagues or having a well deserved day off, but they came and put on a great show.
“That tells you how much Stanley’s legacy means across all of our community.”
Having won the toss, the Huddersfield All Star team, captained by Armitage Bridge’s Jaycob Curtling, elected to bat and were bowled out for 114 in just shy of 20 overs.
After a slow start the hosts never really got going and posted what proved to be a sub-par score as a very strong Huddersfield International Caribbean team knocked off the target with three overs to spare and for the loss of just three wickets.
St Vincent-based Darren Greaves built on his outstanding all-round display in 2017 to scoop this year’s Man-of-the-Match Award with an unbeaten score of 45.
The match marked the launch of a new Stanley Inniss Fund.
Part of the One Community Kirklees portfolio of funds, monies will be used to help local children from disadvantaged backgrounds to get into cricket.
Daniel Inniss, Stanley’s son explained: “As a child, dad was always impressing on me and my At the Stanley Inniss Memorial Cricket Match are captains Jaycob Curtling (left) and Anthony Roberts with their teams. “Today we raised a really decent amount of money and we plan to just keep on building this up with each annual event at Armitage Bridge.”
