A snappy guide to the best new cameras T

-

HERE’S no doubt that smartphone cameras are pretty good these days.

And we all know the saying ‘the best camera is the one we have with us when we want to take a photo’. That camera is almost always on the back of your phone.

But smartphones are thin, and getting thinner by the year – if your only camera is a smartphone camera, pretty soon your photography ambitions are going to do battle with the laws of physics, and they will lose.

That’s why, even in 2018, if you’re serious about taking great photos, you’ll eventually want to consider getting a proper camera.

Here’s five of the latest from five of the greatest camera makers right now. LEICA makes the best cameras in the world, and its M series of cameras is a revered legend in the photography world. The M10 was the pinnacle of its art, but the M10-P now supersedes that, as much by taking things away as by adding them.

There is a new touch-screen, which is a first for a Leica M, but there is also the removal of the trademark Leica red dot from the front of the camera, which means there’s no obvious branding. Then there’s the whisper-quiet shutter for added stealth.

It’s understated, and that tells you all you need to know about the Leica world. Simplicity is key, but quality is all that really matters. It’s pricey but worth it. that’s perfect for almost any situation.

The incredible 24-200mm zoom lens will bring even the most distant action within touching distance, and its small size means it’s more or less pocketable. It’s probably the best compact camera on the market today.
