How Schindler became Town fans’ favourite

-

play-offs in his first season, before clinching top-flight survival the next year.

In his first competitive match for the Terriers after joining from 1860 Munich, Schindler guided Town towards a 2-1 win over Brentford at the John Smith’s Stadium .

The defender netted his first goal in his 12th outing, his header the only goal in a 1-0 win over Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

In his 48th match, Schindler scored a penalty against Reading at Wembley to send Town to the promised land of the Premier League, while he received the only red card of his Town career 60 matches in against West Bromwich Albion .

The Terriers’ player of the season for 2017/18 clinched top-flight safety with a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in his 86th match and scored his first goal in the top division of English football 96 games into his Town stay.

Despite being disappointed with the draw with the Hammers, Schindler reflected on his time at Town after the final whistle and spoke of his desire to add to his three-figure appearance haul.

He told HTTV: “It’s great because, in Germany, you maybe need four seasons to achieve that. Here it is at the beginning of the third one.

“It’s a lot of games and I’m so glad how things went for the club, and for me personally as well, since I got here. I hope many more are going to come. One hundred is a good number and I hope also the development of the club and my development goes the same way as it has gone so far.” Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty is a doubt for the Premier League clash with Huddersfield Town a week on Sunday. The full-back felt the full force of a nasty knock to the face in the Black Country side’s last outing against Arsenal, with the 26-year-old receiving lengthy treatment on the field after the injury. Doherty saw a specialist and had scans on the affected area under his right eye and has since been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s upcoming matches against Northern Ireland and Denmark. No time frame has yet been set for the defender’s recovery, but he could struggle to be passed fit to play in next week’s top-flight test against the Terriers. Doherty has been an everpresent in the league for the newlypromoted side so far this season, scoring one goal and recording two assists in Wolves’ first Premier League campaign since 2011/12.

I’m so glad how things went for the club and for me. I hope many more are going to come.
