I believe in MOU! Wagner backing misfiring striker TOWN BOSS RELAXED OVER MOUNIE’S RUN WITHOUT GOAL

-

PAUL Merson has rarely found reason to back Town in this Premier League season.

But the ex-Arsenal and England striker is predicting in his Sky Sports column that David Wagner’s side will beat Brighton 1-0.

He believes Town will clinch back-to-back top-flight victories for only the third time since their promotion from the Championship, following the 2-0 success at Wolves.

“I didn’t see it coming last weekend with Huddersfield, I couldn’t make a case for them at all and they went to Wolves and won,” he admitted.

“They’ve got to turn it into back-to-back wins now.

“If they go and get beaten at home by Brighton, it all goes out of the window.

“At the start, they would’ve said four points would have been very good from Wolves and Brighton, but back-to-back wins would be superb.

“Instead of dreading the game they’ll be looking forward to it after last weekend, and I think they can do it.”

Of Chris Hughton’s visitors, Merson added: “Brighton are a funny team, they’ll just drift along.

“I don’t see them going down or doing anything majorly special, they’ll get their points.

“I think they’re just bobbing along right now, and that’s a credit to them.

“You’ve got to remember where they came from and it’s only their second year in the league.”

Merson’s 1-0 Town win can be backed at odds of 9/2 with Sky Bet. TOWN head coach David Wagner is relaxed over Steve Mounie’s lack of goals for the Terriers this season.

The 24-year-old has not scored for Town in 12 appearances this campaign and was last on the scoresheet in April, when he capitalised on a Shane Duffy back pass to earn Town a point at Brighton.

Mounie would love to be handed such a gift again today when the Seagulls visit the John Smith’s Stadium, with Wagner revealing that the striker was frustrated with his lack of a goal so far this term ahead BRIGHTON boss Chris Hughton says his side will need to be wary of Town’s versatile attacking style in their Premier League clash this weekend.

West Yorkshire is not a happy hunting ground for Hughton’s men, and the south coast outfit have tasted defeat on their previous two of the clash. But the boss is unconcerned by the Benin international’s form in front of goal and has backed the forward to find his scoring boots in the near future.

When asked whether the striker is getting frustrated by his lack of goals, Wagner responded: “I think yes.

“But he is such a smart guy that he knows how well he is playing.

“I think last Sunday he had another very, very good performance to add to all the other good performances he has shown in the past.

“I am pretty sure the goals are just around the corner for him and for visits to the John Smith’s Stadium.

The away side are in relatively poor form having picked up only one point in their last three games, and Hughton was disappointed to allow 10-men Leicester City an equaliser last weekend after Glenn Murray had put the home team in front with an early goal.

Hughton is aware the Terriers can mix it with a direct style, as well as Lolo [Depoitre], so I am pretty relaxed about it.” Town head into today’s game having taken seven points from the last nine – a run of results which has seen them rise off the foot of the table.

Wagner believes against Wolves last week Town finally got the result they deserved after weeks of bad luck for the Terriers.

He said: “What was totally different last week was that we really had the feeling that we got a reward for our performance.

“In the performances before, I think we deserved more than what we got.

“After this game, where we performed on a very high level, all over the park, individually and as a team, defensively and offensively, we got the deserved reward.”

However, Wagner says he isn’t interested in where the recent results have put his side in the league table.

He said: “We were not focused on the table before the Wolves game

I am pretty sure the goals are just around the corner for him, so I am pretty relaxed

being capable of fluid counterattacking performances like the superb win at Molineux last weekend, when Aaron Mooy’s double proved decisive.

He sent a message to his side that they will need to raise the bar to take the three points back to Sussex.

“We need to be good in possession and we need to be a threat going there,” he said.

“They have changed some aspects and we are not focused on the table now. It makes no sense because it is still so tight. We are only now focused on the next game, which is Brighton. “We are in a position where we can say we are on a good run and we will fight for everything and work for everything to try and extend this. “Our next opponent is Brighton, who we have played very often because they were with us in the Championship as well, and we know everything about each other. We know we have a big, big chance with our supporters at our back to get another result against them, even though it will be difficult. “We would like to grab this chance with both hands, but we know that for this we have to again be at our best. We have to confirm what we have been showing in the last games, and so I ask our supporters to come in numbers and bring an atmosphere to the stadium so that we can give Brighton a real fight.” of their game. They are capable at times of going a little bit longer to the front than perhaps before and they can adapt their game.

“But they are a good side, a good crowd at home.

“We will have to be good on the ball, certainly a goal scoring threat, because I don’t think you can go away from home anywhere and sit back for big periods and not be vulnerable at some stage.”
