Wagner: Town gave Cherries early presents

67 per cent of possession, but the damage had already been done.

Terence Kongolo pulled one goal back for the visitors, but the Terriers could not break down the home side to steal at least a point - which could be crucial in the relegation battle.

Boss Wagner admitted his side did not deserve anything from the match, highlighting Town’s poor defensive display in the opening half hour as a key reason for the loss.

He said: “I would like to make it clear, I don’t think we deserved anything out of the game because defensively we gave two easy goals away, which were presents.

“Offensively, we haven’t put the chances away, you can’t hope for something out of football matches.

“Yes, everything in between was good, we played well, it was a very good performance, we were brave, we pressed them high, we created good chances but we gave Christmas presents away and that is why we didn’t deserve something out of this game.

“We know exactly what we have done well, everyone has seen it, but we know exactly what we have to do better to collect points.

“If we continue to perform like this and continue to create opportunities, we have to put them away.

“This isn’t the first time in the season we have had a lot of praise for our performances, but we have to make a few things better.

“The season is on, we are in the middle of the race and we know exactly what we have to do better. I am frustrated and disappointed, and I am angry as well to be totally honest,” added the head coach, who revealed Abdelhamid Sabiri had a bad shoulder injury. “We were not concentrating and focused enough. “If you give these presents away and you are 2-0 down, even if the referee’s decision before the first free-kick was anything but a foul, we have to defend it correctly and hold your line. “On the other side, the chances we created which we haven’t used are presents as well - and before Christmas we gave Bournemouth a lot of presents and this is why we didn’t deserve to get anything out of this game. “Even if, in between, the guys played well and it was a very good performance in which we controlled the game, we cannot make the mistakes which we have done defensively or offensively, and this is why we have to blame ourselves. “We know we performed on a high level, not for the first time, and we feel we are competitive, but there are situations where we have to be more concentrated and more focused and better.”
