THE VERDICT: ARSENAL 1 TOWN 0 Town boss has mixed emotions after defeat WAGNER IS PROUD OF HIS PLAYERS AS DEFENDERS STAND UP TO GUNNERS’ ATTACKING ONSLAUGHT

-

DAVID Wagner was proud of the effort and application of Huddersfield Town in their 1-0 defeat at Arsenal but ended up counting the injury cost.

While Town battled superbly and were undone only by an 83rd-minute strike from Lucas Torreira, Wagner had mixed emotions because of the injuries and because Town’s team play did not earn a reward.

Arsenal extended their unbeaten run to 21 matches with a win, but they will seldom have had to work harder for three points. “I have mixed emotions because we did so many things right and then conceded so late on,” said Wagner, who has Tommy Smith, Jonathan Hogg, Aaron Mooy and Terence Kongolo under treatment.

“With their effort and togetherness they really limited Arsenal’s top quality which they have.

“They had far fewer shots on target and this shows just how well our players have done.

“Tactically and defensively this was a very good performance against a top side. Offensively, we were not able to create a lot of opportunities, maybe a couple of half chances where we should have done it better, but at the end it is a little bit frustrating that we didn’t get the point. I am proud, though, of the way the players have done it because, if you play Arsenal away I don’t think a lot of teams will look as solid as we have looked today.

“It’s another good performance, we will continue consistently on a very good level and I am excited about what we’ve done in this gamet.”

Smith suffered a hamstring injury and was carried off on a stretcher, while Hogg hobbled to the sidelines with groin and left wrist injuries. Mooy and Kongolo both took knocks and will be assessed before Town take on Newcastle United at the John Smith’s Stadium next weekend.

“Now we have two home games against Newcastle and Southampton - you have to play every opponent twice in a season, though, so the table at this stage is irrelevant,” said Wagner.
