than a handful of new windows, thought to date from the early 1800s.
Inside, former court chambers will be turned into new living spaces.
According to Huddersfield-based designers and architects, Acumen: “The proposed development seeks to ensure the longevity of the existing building, which if left in its current state could quickly fall into a state of disrepair with the roof lead being at risk of vandalism leading to failed roofing and potentially damaging the remaining historic assets.”
Chan, managing director of estate and letting agents company, Whitegates in Market Street, Huddersfield, said: “We love the building, it’s iconic, and we think it’s the best-looking building in town with a fantastic location just yards away from the town centre, staggering distance to The County and close to the University of Huddersfield.
“We are planning to have six apartments on the first floor, four on the second floor and three on the ground floor along with a retail unit.
“Three of them will have their own gardens and entrance. Eleven of the apartments will be one-bedders and two of them two-bedders which will boast en suite facilities along with their own lounge and kitchen.”
Chan, who said he was notified by Kirklees planners of their decision to give conditional permission on Tuesday, added that the apartments would be ideal for young professionals with everything they might want on their doorstep.
