Chairman condemns homophobic chanting

CHAIRMAN Dean Hoyle has told all Huddersfield Town fans discriminatory behaviour and attitudes are not welcome at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Huddersfield Town LGBT supporters group, Proud Terriers, were horrified to report homophobic chanting from elements of the Town support towards Brighton fans, during the 1-0 home defeat at the beginning of this month.

An investigation has been launched, with any fans found to have been involved in such abuse threatened with a ground ban.

Hoyle, whose club are now second-bottom of the Premier League following Southampton’s win against Arsenal, used his programme notes for the Newcastle game to condemn such abuse.

“We’ve seen a few examples of discriminatory behaviour recently in a football environment, including an alleged incident at our ground in our most recent home fixture,” said Hoyle in the matchday programme, The Terrier.

“I want to take this opportunity to make this as clear as possible; discriminatory behaviour and attitudes are not welcome here.

“I’m so, so proud of how welcoming a club Huddersfield Town has been during my time not just as chairman, but as a fan, and the archaic attitudes of a select few cannot be allowed to affect this.”

When asked about the homophobic chanting at the Brighton match, head coach David Wagner explained: “I did not hear it during the game but, obviously, I have been made aware about the report.

“We will be very strong with it and we will make sure no-one is welcome who has thoughts like this.

“Like in the past, we as a club will be strong and will deal with it very strongly when the investigations are over.”
