A TEENAGER who had a sawn-off shotgun during a police chase across Huddersfield has been jailed for six years.

Jermaine Henson drove a motorcycle through Lowerhouses and Almondbury on July 23 this year.

The major police operation resulted in armed police and a police helicopter being used to trace him and another person to woodland off Kidroyd Lane in Almondbury.

It was the second time that Henson, of Highcroft Crescent in Almondbury, had driven dangerously in around two months.

Ian Mullarkey, prosecuting, told Leeds Crown Court that during one of the incidents the unlicensed 19-yearold reached speeds of up to 60mph in 30mph zones before abandoning the vehicle.

Henson pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited smoothbore gun, driving without a licence, driving without insurance, dangerous driving, having a lock knife and possession of cannabis in relation to the incident on July 23.

Henson also pleaded guilty to driving without a licence, driving without insurance, dangerous driving and having a lock knife in relation to an incident on May 21.

Peter Byrne, mitigating, said Henson lived with his father after his mother died when he was aged 12.

He said that when Henson found himself unemployed for a period of time after studying joinery at college he had ‘time on his hands and was bored’ so started to associate with local people who were in a similar situation and a bad influence.

He said the roads were quiet at the time of the police chase.

Mr Byrne said Henson has been in HMP Doncaster since July, adding: “He has found that experience of being in custody away from his family perhaps more trying than others might.

“He has settled down well.”

Judge Rodney Jameson QC, who previously ordered forfeiture and destruction of the firearm, sentenced Henson to six years’ imprisonment.

Two of Henson’s four sisters sat in the public gallery during his previous court hearing.
