Travel firm reopens – a week after shock closure

- By ROBERT SUTCLIFFE

A HUDDERSFIELD town centre travel company which closed out of the blue has reopened.

Abbeyways Hanson Coach Services Ltd, situated at Upperhead Row, by Huddersfield Bus Station, shut last week.

A High Court enforcement notice was placed on its front door by representatives of Salford-based debt recovery firm Andrew Wilson & Co.

It explained that the deadline for the company to fulfil its obligations was December 26 after which an unspecified amount of goods would be disposed of.

However, David Croft, who said he had worked at the company on-and-off or 20 years, told the Examiner : “There are no financial problems. The problem was with the lease which has been concluded.

“We rent from the lessor but there isn’t one at the moment so we are in limbo.”

He said a professional locksmith employed by the debt recovery firm had been to the shop when it was shut during the night to “avoid any aggravation” and produced the lock for the Examiner’s inspection.

Huddersfield Bus Station opened in 1974 and is owned and is managed by Metro – the West Yorkshire transport operator.

Mr Croft said it was uncertain whether the company would remain at the premises in Upperhead Row as he claimed Metro were looking at increasing the price of the lease significantly.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority, which operates the Metro network of bus stations, travel centres and public transport information in West Yorkshire, has been approached for comment.
