Tributes to be paid to landlord at Town match

A MAD-keen Leeds United fan is to be remembered by Huddersfield Town supporters in a tribute during the team’s match against Southampton tomorrow.

Peter Woodhead, 55, the owner and landlord of The Vulcan, Town’s unofficial pub since 1992, died late at night on Friday, December 14, after a long illness.

Peter, along with many other Town fans who have died during the past year, will be featured on the big screen at the John Smith’s Stadium, as part of Town’s fifth staging of the memorial match.

Tributes will be shown before the game and at half-time.

Peter was involved in pubs all his life after being born in a pub – The Rose and Crown, Golcar, on July 4, 1963.

He spent the rest of his life in Huddersfield town centre’s licensed premises including The Crown, Westgate, and The Royal Swan, Westgate, before moving to his spiritual home, ‘The Vulc’ in St Peter’s Street.

Despite his Leeds United affiliations, he was an incredibly popular and much-loved landlord during his 26 years in residence there.

Especially, as he acted as one of Huddersfield Town’s longestserving On the Move agents, and had been one since the club came out of administration more than 15 years ago.

Peter’s father, Stuart, 80, and a former publican himself, said: “I think it’s fantastic and a wonderful gesture on the part of Huddersfield Town.”

Peter’s sister, Julia Woodhead, who used to run The Saddle at Lindley, added: “I think it’s great. Sadly, I won’t be able to be at the game as I will be working at The Vulcan but I have asked friends to video it for me so I can watch it later.

“All the staff will be thinking of him at half-time around 3.45pm when the memorial happens.”

Huddersfield Town’s promotions manager, Karen Haigh, said: “We have a memorial programme on Saturday and Peter’s name will be included in it.

“He had been an agent for me for 15 years. The memorial is something we do every two months for Town fans’ relatives who want to have their loved ones remembered. He will also be mentioned in the notes we will be doing for the Burnley programme when Town play them in the New Year.”
