A SCHOOL pupil on work experience won the hearts of staff and patients during a stint at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Maisie-Jane Thompson was singled out by health workers for her compassion, politeness, communication skills and ability to work on her own initiative.

It’s particularly impressive as Maisie-Jane is only 15 and was working on a challenging ward dealing with vulnerable patients who are alcohol and/or drug dependent.

Hospital staff were so impressed they wrote to Newsome High School to say they had never had a work placement pupil quite like her.

In a letter, a staff nurse said: “Maisie has been an absolute delight to have on the ward.

“She has shown initiative and is always willing to offer a helping hand. Patients have had nothing but wonderful things to say about her and she will be missed on the ward.”

The nurse said Maisie-Jane had a “warm and friendly manner” and had provided “compassionate care when needed.”

Maisie-Jane’s parents Peter and Kelly from Almondbury received a Letter of Recognition from Newsome’s head, Dean Watkin, who said it was a privilege to have Maisie-Jane at the school.

Mr Watkin said the school had received a phone call from a ward manager at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary who had been impressed by Maisie-Jane.

The head said: “Her placement has been on one of the most chal- lenging wards in the trust – a gastro ward dealing with patients that are alcohol and drug dependent.

“They have received comments from many high up professionals saying how her maturity and professionalism are way beyond her years.”

“We are privileged to have Maisie-Jane at Newsome High School. I am so very proud of her.”

Maisie-Jane’s dad Peter told the Examiner : “Some of the doctors assumed she was at university and couldn’t believe she was only 15. They gave her a glowing reference.”

Following the work experience, Maisie-Jane – who eventually wants to work as a nurse – helped organise a non-uniform day at school and baked buns and cakes which she sold to teachers and pupils, raising £450 for the ward where she worked.
