A LEARNER driver’s car smashed into the back of a double decker bus at Bradley Bar roundabout yesterday.

The white Vauxhall Corsa ran into the back of the bus while it waited at the bus stop where Bradley Road and Fixby Road meet Bradford Road.

The driver got out of the car and fell to the floor clutching his head, according to witnesses.

He was tended to by passers-by until paramedics arrived and could assess him. He was not thought to be seriously injured.

The accident caused some damage to both vehicles but only the driver of the car was hurt.

An eyewitness said: “We were sat at the back of the bus when there was an almighty bang. He just ran into the back of the bus.

“I don’t know whether he had a heart attack or some other medical condition but the driver got out of the car and collapsed in the road clutching his head.”

West Yorkshire Police said they were called to the scene of the accident at 2.18pm.

A police spokeswoman confirmed it involved a white Vauxhall Corsa and a double decker bus.

She added: “The driver of the Corsa was assessed by paramedics at the scene but is not believed to be seriously injured.”

One lane of the roundabout – close to the bus stop – was blocked by the crashed vehicles and this caused significant congestion for traffic.

Queues built up along Bradford Road and Bradley Road.

A funeral cortege, heading to Huddersfield Crematorium, was also caught up in the jam.
