RHIANNON MCDOWALL ENJOYED A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO CAMBRIDGE

-

MY weekend in Cambridge started with checking in to the Felix Hotel, a beautiful countryside hotel with bags of character and grounds.

A stunning old hotel, built as a grand family home more than 150 years ago, its no surprise it’s a popular wedding venue.

The rooms are a good size and include everything you would need - including fresh milk, which always earns extra brownie points.

The hotel’s restaurant Graffiti also serves up a very tasty meal. It was clearly popular with locals as well as guests, with a good selection of fine dining on offer.

I tried the razor clams with white wine and chorizo, and the Roast Lamb with feta potatoes, spiced aubergine puree and toasted pumpkin seeds, and both were delicious.

While it has the feel of a hotel restaurant, the food was definitely high end.

The hotel also has an Orangery which overlooks the terrace and grounds and is the perfect spot for an afternoon tea or light bite.

The hotel breakfast lived up to expectation with a huge range to choose from. As well as the continental, with the usual a range of juices, cereals and fruit, as well as cooked breakfasts.

Staff were friendly and police, and very tolerant of people with allergies.

Another big attraction to the hotel is that fact that amid all its splendour and style, it is also dog friendly. It’s a treat to find somewhere you can bring your pooch without having to compromise on style or quality.

Situated on outskirts of the city, it may not seem like an obvious choice for people heading to the city for the weekend.

But it boasts a huge car park, has a bus stop with yards, and is also a hub for Ofo bikes. Similar to Boris Bikes in London, users can hire the canary yellow cycles by downloading an app and use them as they require. Unfortunately, we chose one of the wettest weekends of the year to visit, so we stuck to taxis, which cost around £15 into the city.

Cambridge city centre is absolutely stunning and steeped in history. But if you, like me, don’t really know much about it, then a good way to explore is by on a punting tour. A traditional boat ride up the River Cam, you can learn all about the city, and in particular its university and churches.

Another option, especially if the weather isn’t great, is to take part in Treasure Trails hunt. A fun and family friendly treasure hunt around the city,
