Residents blast bin collections as rubbish piles up

HOUSEHOLD rubbish is piling up in wheelie bins outside homes across Kirklees – but spare a thought for residents whose bins will go unemptied for more than two weeks.

That’s the situation facing Denby Dale residents like Paul Clarke who has noticed overflowing household bins in the village in recent days. He has noticed discarded nappies in the street and black bin bags left out on street corners.

He sent a photo to the Examiner of overflowing bin bags near homes on Wakefield Road, Denby Dale.

Mr Clarke says the gap between collections – around 17 days – appears to be a week longer than previous Christmas holidays.

Collection day is normally Tuesday but both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on a Tuesday this festive period, so it meant the last normal collection was on Tuesday, December 18.

The next collection will be January 4, a Friday, to make up for the missed collection earlier that week.

Mr Clarke, who works as a part-time driver, described the bin collection service over the festive period as “poor.” He added: “Due to poor bin collections over Christmas, people have taken to dumping their domestic rubbish in the streets of Denby Dale. It’s a public health hazard.”

Mr Clarke said it appeared that some residents had taken to putting their household waste in council litter bins.

In a statement a Kirklees Council spokesman said: “During the festive break, most households will have just one less bin collection than normal.

“In the meantime, residents are asked to manage their waste, knowing that collections are affected over the festive period. Waste can be taken to any local recycling centre, including glass and materials for recycling, and even your unwanted Christmas tree. Residents need to register their vehicle to access the household waste recycling centre.”
