Teen ar­rested after re­ports of man with knife

A TEENAGE boy has been ar­rested by po­lice in­ves­ti­gat­ing re­ports a knife­man was wan­der­ing the streets of New­some.

The 15-year-old was ar­rested on sus­pi­cion of as­sault and pos­ses­sion of an of­fen­sive weapon at 8.35am yes­ter­day, West York­shire Po­lice said.

No-one was in­jured dur­ing the in­ci­dent, which oc­curred in New­some Road South.

Chief Insp Alan Travis, of West York­shire Po­lice, said: “I can un­der­stand peo­ple’s con­cern about this in­ci­dent and we had a num­ber of calls about it. Of­fi­cers were quickly on the scene and we have ar­rested some­one in con­nec­tion with it.”

New­some is­sued a warn­ing to par­ents after the re­ports.

The pre-school’s deputy man­ager Lisa Mosley said: “There was a ru­mour from other par­ents that there was some­one walk­ing the streets with a knife.

“We look after young chil­dren so we put the mes­sage on as a pre­cau­tion to par­ents.”

New­some High School (NHS) also is­sued a short state­ment to par­ents via text mes­sage, in­set.

The school said the in­di­vid­ual in­volved was not a pupil of the school. It said yes­ter­day: “You may be aware of an in­ci­dent in the New­some area this morn­ing.

“The per­son in­volved was not a stu­dent at NHS (New­some High School.

“Po­lice have at­tended and dealt with the in­ci­dent.”

The school did not wish to com­ment fur­ther.
