A DRUNK man who ran at cars, forcing a mum to slam on her brakes when he hit the bonnet, cried as he came to court.

Police were scrambled to an address in Whitehead Lane, Primrose Hill, at 6.30pm on December 19.

Prosecutor Nadine Clough told Kirklees Magistrates’ Court in Huddersfield: “Police attended after receiving reports from members of the public.

“They said a male had been stood in the middle of the road running at cars, trying to kick the vehicles and being abusive.

“One witness said she had been driving her car with her sevenyear-old daughter inside.

“She said she had to slam on the brakes in an emergency stop and he had his hands on the bonnet.”

Police arrived to find the man responsible, David Lord, in a drunken state and described his behaviour as ‘up and down.’

Lord said he’d drunk a bottle of whisky after relapsing that day following a five-month break from alcohol.

Rachel Smith, mitigating, explained that her client had a long-standing history of drug misuse and that had been replaced by alcohol abuse.

She said: “He has been trying to engage with local services but on this particular day had drunk a bottle of whisky and accepts the behaviour explained by witnesses.”

Lord, of Field Road in Holmfirth, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly in public.

He wept as he apologised to the court for his behaviour.

Chairman of the bench John Gledhill told him : “You seemed to be doing all right for five months and then you fell off the wagon.”

He handed Lord a 12-month conditional discharge, meaning that he will not be punished if he stays out of trouble for the next year.

Lord still has to pay £85 prosecution costs and £20 victim surcharge.

He asked for this to be taken out of his benefits at a rate of £5 a week ‘because I’m really skint’.
