Mooy steps up training but won’t return just yet

possible. I am not yet fully match fit but you can only get match fitness by playing matches and I have not been playing at Huddersfield.

“I will build up my fitness by playing games here but I’m very fit at the moment and I will soon be match fit.”

The forward added that he was looking forward to playing as a striker at Portman Road, rather than in the wide areas he had been operating in with the Terriers.

“I definitely believe my best position is through the middle,” he said. “I have also played a lot of games in the past in a wide position but I definitely prefer being up top in the centre.

“It is a big part of my reason to come here that the gaffer wants to play me up top. AARON Mooy has stepped up his training but is still some way back from returning for Town.

The Australian is recovering from a knee injury sustained in the defeat to Arsenal.

His loss has been a huge blow to the Terriers, and head coach David Wagner says it is likely he won’t be back until next month.

“Throughout my career, when I have played my best games and scored most of my goals it has been when I was playing through the middle. With my ability and the way I play it is the best position I can play in.

“I scored a lot of goals for Union Berlin, the club I left to join Huddersfield. I was playing up top in the centre there and that was supposed to be my position when I went to Huddersfield.

“But we had some injuries and the coach, David Wagner, knew I could also play wide as well and switched me out to the right.”

Having switched one relegation battle for another, Quaner will now be hoping for more than one side to climb off the bottom and avoid the drop come May.

“Aaron has been doing more intense work, but I don’t have any updates that he made any huge progress or that he is near to training with the group,” said Wagner.

“I think this means it will be the end of January or beginning of February when he is back.

“This is the reality, although I haven’t spoken about Aaron over the last few days because we are aware he is not available against Cardiff.

“But I have every trust in my medical department they will do everything to bring him back as soon as possible.

“If it is sooner, great, happy days.”
