THE last time Huddersfield Town won at Cardiff, their team included an ex-Leeds United defender and a USA international.

And strangely enough, it happened in a season when both Town and Cardiff reached the play-offs in what was then Nationwide League Division Two.

Town won 2-1 at Cardiff’s old Ninian Park ground in September 2001.

Peter Thorne gave the Bluebirds an eighth-minute lead, but Town were soon level through Dwayne Mattis on 20 minutes.

Town’s winner came from Danny Schofield 11 minutes after half-time as Lou Macari’s side chalked their fifth win in nine matches at the start of the campaign.

In goal for Town in his native Wales was the current England goalkeeping coach, Martyn Margetson, who was the only ever-present for the Terriers in 2001-02.

The defence featured Nathan Clarke, Steve Jenkins, Kevin Gray and former Leeds defender Gareth Evans.

Mattis, Kenny Irons and Chris Holland patrolled the midfield while playing either side of Andy Booth up front were Schofield and USA international John Thorrington.

Booked by referee John Brandwood (Lichfield) were Welshman Jenkins and Irons.

Town went on to score 10 wins in 14 games at the start of 2002 to book sixth place in the table and a shot at Brentford in the play-off semi-finals, but after a 0-0 draw, Town lost 2-1 at Griffin Park (Boothy on target).

Cardiff also lost their semifinal to eventual play-off winners Stoke City, who went up alongside champions Brighton and second-placed Reading. ERIK Durm has seen David Wagner achieve one great escape – and is backing him to inspire another with Huddersfield Town.

Now a World Cup winner and Premier League star, the versatile 26-year-old was part of Wagner’s Borussia Dortmund II side which put together a magnificent survival sequence in 3 Liga in 2012-13.

They came from nowhere and were written off to finish 16th out of 20, and Durm says that effort can provide inspiration now, both for himself and for Wagner.
