Cardiff boss backs ref’s penalty call

- By MEL BOOTH By MEL BOOTH

“When you get a decision like that it pulls the rug from under your feet.

“There was massive opportunity for us to take three points today. I think our display deserved that.

“The referee always says ‘don’t crowd round me after I’ve made a decision, because I won’t ever change it, so it was frustrating.

“It was hard for me to keep my head as captain, but I tried my best to keep the lads going and try and pull through it. “On the positive side, we didn’t get beat. It’s a point on the board.

“We need to try and take some positives out of it and look

forward again.”

“EVERYONE worked their socks off. They put in a real effort.

“We spoke about taking responsibility for your own performance and your own game and I think today the lads did that.

“It’s just that small bit of luck and that small bit of quality that we need to stick it in the back of the net.” “IT’S hard when you’re going through a time like this as everyone can imagine.

“The football this year hasn’t been any different to last year’s, from the performances we didn’t get the results we did last year.

“Maybe we had a bit more luck last year, but certainly this year it’s not going our way.

“But we need to try our best and stay positive and keep everyone’s heads up because it’s easy to start blaming people and pointing fingers, which we’re not about.

“We don’t want that in the group and we need good characters and good personnel around us.” JONAS Lossl says David Wagner is a strong Huddersfield Town leader and can’t understand why anyone would question his position with the club.

The Danish goalkeeper has been as frustrated as anyone with the turn of events which has left Town bottom of the Premier League table and struggling for survival.

Lossl, however, believes Wagner and the squad can still turn things around, win matches against the odds and seal top-flight survival in the remaining games.

“He is a very, very strong leader,” said Lossl of any pressure on boss Wagner.

“I don’t see it, we don’t feel it, he is realistic and he is honest.

“I have said this also when we have had success, he is the same now.

“He gives us the truth, but he also sticks to what he knows will get us out of this.

“For me, he is keeping his head cool which, for me as a player personally I need in this situation.

“So I think he is doing a great job and I don’t see it changes anything if he wasn’t here. I have 100 per cent support for him.”

Town’s next test is against champions Manchester City, next Sunday at 1.30pm, the start of a daunting run of fixtures which also includes games against Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal.

“We did get results against them (the bigger clubs) last season, so why not show we can do that again?” said Lossl.

“We’ve got 16 games left and a big belief that we can turn this around.

“There’s still enough character and spirit in the team to do that.

“That (penalty) decision is a hard blow. We needed that penalty, we needed the three points and that would have helped us.

“But I’m happy that we keep showing a good attitude and we have that belief that our luck will turn.

“We will keep working hard and show the same next week.” CARDIFF manager Neil Warnock, perhaps not surprisingly, had a different take on the penalty decision reversed against his old club Huddersfield Town.

Warnock felt David Wagner’s side should not have had a spot-kick when Flo Hadergjonaj went down under challenge from Joe Bennett and he insisted Cardiff should have had a first-half penalty when Hadergjonaj appeared to trip Junior Hoilett.

“It was a good job we had an experienced linesman because there was not enough contact for a penalty,” Warnock said after the 0-0 draw which leaves his team still eight points clear of the Terriers.

“Thankfully, the linesman (Stuart Burt) was well placed and was brave enough to see it for what it was.

“Junior Hoilett’s penalty shout was 10 times worse.

“How that can be two people with a genuine coming together over the ball, I don’t know.”

Cardiff failed to manage a single attempt on target in what was a poor display from the home side, who were frustrated by Town’s battling.

But Warnock said neither of his two frontmen, Callum Paterson and Victor Camarasa, were fully fit, saying: “They have helped me out.

“Camarasa has got a muscle injury from last week and Paterson couldn’t get around like he normally does.

“It would have been easy to have lost that game in the last few minutes.

“But that’s our sixth clean sheet, which is a good statistic. If you cannot win, then you get a point.”

The 70-year-old has been frustrated in attempts to sign foreign players during the January transfer window, with Cardiff confirming bids have been made for Nantes striker Emiliano Sala and Nice midfielder Adrien Tameze.

“We’ve got three main targets now,” Warnock said.

“But we thought we had a midfielder (Tameze) signed last week and that fell through.

“I don’t think you can say anything until they’re actually sat in your office signing the papers.

“Agents get a sniff elsewhere, with better deals. That’s the job we’re in at the minute.”
