Billing and Stankovic win call-ups for Euros

TWO Huddersfield Town players have received their first international call-ups after impressing for the Terriers.

Jon Gorenc Stankovic has been included in the Solvenia squad and Philip Billing has been selected by Denmark as qualifying campaigns for Euro 2020 begin.

Stankovic, 23, has played 18 times for his nation’s under-21 side but never for the senior team.

Since Town boss Jan Siewert brought him into the Terriers starting line-up at holding midfielder against Wolves, the defender has shown a different side to his game in three impressive performances.

Slovenian manager Matjaz Kek has named Stankovic as a defender in his squad but will be well aware of his versatility.

Slovenia have been drawn in Group G and play Israel away on Thursday 21 and Macedonia at home on Sunday, March 24.

Billing, who has eight caps for Denmark’s under-21 side, joins experienced international competitors Mathias ‘Zanka’ Jorgensen and Jonas Lossl in the Dane’s senior side.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season in the Premier League, starting almost every game in centre midfield for both David Wagner and Siewert.

Denmark’s first game of the international break is a friendly away to Kosovo on March 21 and they start their Group D campaign five days later with a tough fixture away to Switzerland.

Steve Mounie will be hoping to help his Benin side qualify for the African Cup of Nations for just the third time since

1962.

On March 24 they host

Togo knowing a win or a draw would see them confirm their place at this summer’s tournament. HUDDERSFIELD Town head coach Jan Siewert has seen his selection options seriously limited by injuries recently.

Ahead of the Bournemouth match last Saturday, the German arrived at a press conference with the team’s extensive injury list written on a piece of paper so he didn’t forget anyone as he reeled off the absentees.

The situation has not been helped by the recent suspension of Tommy Smith following his red card at Newcastle, which has ruled him THE big Belgian missed the Bournemouth game with a foot injury.

On the Thursday before the match, Siewert said: “Also, Laurent Depoitre has a problem with a foot at the moment, so I am not quite sure if it’s possible for him at the weekend.”

If he was touch and go for last Saturday, another week’s recovery could have put him in line for a return. 20-YEAR-OLD full-back, Duhaney, was taken off 45 minutes into his debut against Wolves.

The last we heard about the injury was on the Thursday before the Bournemouth game, when Siewert said: “Demeaco has a problem with a hip, so he is not able to play.”
