Bookings open for children’s summer camp

ONE of the UK’s longest running summer camps is welcoming children once again this year.

Kirklees Summer Playcamp is open to everyone from all over the country, not just Kirklees.

And for more than 40 years thousands of children have spent their school holidays camping, playing games and making friends.

The camp is open to children aged nine to 12. In small groups they will have the opportunity to play lots of games, go on the water slide and enjoy the final night’s Camp’s Got Talent, disco and campfire.

The children stay at camp for three nights and four days and are collected and returned to one of three central pick up points in Huddersfield, Dewsbury and the Woolley Edge services on the M1.

The camp is run by a team of experienced volunteers who ensure that the children are safe and able to have fun.

Jane and Duncan Haywood have been camp leaders since 1988 and in 2005 were awarded MBEs in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for their work.

They said: “We had a great summer last year. Every camp was full and we loved playing all the games with the children. We can’t wait for this summer!”

The Playcamp also offers young people the opportunity to complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award residential. And there are subsidised places for children from low income families.

The dates for summer 2019 are: ■Camp 1: Tuesday - Friday (July 23-26) ■Camp 2: Saturday-Tuesday (July 27-30) Camp 3: Thursday-Sunday (August 1-4) ■Camp 4: Monday-Thursday (August 5-8)

■Camp 5: Saturday-Tuesday (August 10-13)

■Camp 6: Wednesday-Saturday (August 14-17)
