Jill Dando’s murder: a fresh look at the evidence

-

HOT dead on her doorstep in April 1999, journalist and T V presenter Jill Dando was killed in broad daylight at her London home.

But two decades on, police remain baffled as the case goes unsolved, with theories ranging from criminal gangs to stalkers to professional hit men.

At the time, Barry George, a local man with learning difficulties, was arrested and later wrongfully imprisoned for the murder for seven years.

But since his release, there have been no further arrests.

With the 20th anniversar y of Jill’s death tomorrow, this documentary sees journalist Julie Etchingham investigate the mystery.

She has access to thousands of pages from the case, from legal documents to police records, and also revisits the crime scene. But it’s the interviews that are most fascinating.

In an interview, Barry George says : “When they question you about a murder and you haven’t done it, it’s somewhat overwhelming, and just absolutely ludicrous.”

Elsewhere, one of Jill’s best friends Sir Cliff Richard tells how he was helping her plan her upcoming wedding to Alan Farthing.

He says : “She was going to use my Rolls-Royce to arrive at the church. But of course, the sad story is that that didn’t happen. And she was taken from us rather cruelly, it just doesn’t make sense.

“It’s still a mystery to me that they haven’t been able to find her killer.”

This is a fascinating look across all the theories surrounding one of the most shocking murder cases in British histor y.
