Hoylandswa­ine face newcomers in derby

REGULAR FINALISTS HOST BARKISLAND IN SECOND ROUND OF CUP

THERE are two Drakes Huddersfie­ld Cricket League ‘derbies’ in the second round of the Heavy Woollen Cup.

Five Drakes teams got through the first round, but four have them have drawn each other.

Regular finalists Hoylandswa­ine are at home to Premiershi­p newcomers Barkisland on Sunday, May 12, while Scholes entertain Shepley at Chapelgate on the same day.

The other side through – Elland of the Jedi Sports Championsh­ip – have been drawn away to Wrenthorpe.

Hoylandswa­ine avenged their final defeats of 2015 and 2017 by defeating Woodlands in the Solly Sports-sponsored knockout first round.

Overseas signing Waqas Maqsood hit 57 from 26 balls, Chris Holliday 51 and Durham opener Alex Lees 48 in a total of 248.

Mawsood then took three for 32 as Woodlands were bowled out for 179.

Shepley piled up a massive 378-8 in destroying Ossett, opener Dan Wood hitting 130. Sam Tee finished 84 not out after skipper Greg Wood had hit 63.

Tom Chadwick – who will be up against his former Scholes teammates in the second round after moving clubs in the winter – took five for 10 as Ossett were sent back for 164 (they were 76-9).

Scholes powered to a seven-wicket win at Elsecar, where former Yorkshire and Meltham player Ian Swallow scored 42 in their 169-9.

Skipper Josh Brook and brother Louis each took three for 40.

Ex-Hoylandswa­ine opener Gharib Nawaz made 66 and Yaasar Imtiaz 61 as Scholes registered a comfortabl­e win.

James Lee hit an unbeaten 103 for Elland in a 105-run win over Gomersal, while Barkisland won by five wickets against Rastrick, Matthew
