Onomah rumours wide of the mark

REPORTS that Town have ‘opened talks’ with Tottenham in a bid to sign 22-year-old attacking midfielder Josh Onomah are wide of the mark, according to sources close to the Terriers.

Football Insider report had suggested that Town were ‘looking to win the race’ for the former Sheffield Wednesday and Aston Villa loanee, who has been capped by England at Under-21 level.

But the Examiner understands those reports do not have any truth to them, despite word to the contrary coming out of London.

Onomah made 15 appearances for the Owls in an injury-hit campaign last season, playing in every position across the midfield and picking up three assists. The year before he was at Villa and scored four goals in 33 Championship appearances.

This is not the first time Onomah has been linked with Town: his name also came up among the usual transfer gossip in summer 2017.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth have completed the signing of Philip Billing from Town for an undisclosed fee believed to be in the region of £15m.

The Danish midfielder had been with Town since he was a teenager, moving from Esbjerg aged just 16 in 2013. He has scored six goals in 91 appearances since making his debut in November 2015.

Billing was named both the Players’ Player of the Year and Players’ Young Player of the Year last season, but did not appear in any of Town’s last seven games of the campaign, reportedly after making clear his intentions to seek a move elsewhere.

Head coach Jan Siewert said: “Phil made it clear to me that he saw his future away from Huddersfield Town. We were open to that, but we made it clear that the club would not accept anything below the value we placed on him.

“At the same time, I want the players in our squad to be totally committed to what we are doing here and that is why Phil hasn’t been involved with the first team during pre-season.

“This transfer suits everyone and I genuinely wish Phil all the best for the future.”
