THE Colne Valley Federation team ended their season in agonising fashion as they lost out 18-14 to Barnsley in their final league game.

The defeat means they failed to retain their Division 1 title, having needed 19 chalks to overhaul newly crowned champions Leeds A.

The match was split over two days as the away team traveled to West Melton in Wath-uponDearne on Saturday night. Captain Gary Siswick (Crosland Moor) got the Colne Valley off to the perfect start with an impressive 21-10 success, but the match quickly swung in Barnsley’s favour as they registered the next five winners.

Victories from Michael Sweeney, Matt Hollingworth and Wayne Moseley stopped the rot, but a further three defeats saw an 8-4 loss and a sizable 30 point aggregate deficit to make up at home.

The home leg was played on Sunday, with a large crowd watching.

Josh Brown (Kirkheaton Con) picked up a sweep winning 21-10 to get the ball rolling, but any momentum for the Colne Valley was quickly snuffed out as Matthew Parkes registered an eye catching win for Barnsley as he overturned newly crowned Pudsey Classic winner Craig Gant 21-16.

The home team went on to register eight winners, with George Turton (Lindley BC) impressing on debut as he backed up his Huddersfield Merit winning form with a 21-12 success. It wasn’t enough however, with Barnsley capturing the overall aggregate by 16 chalks.
