Thomas all set to hit the roads of Yorkshire

- CYCLING

FORMER Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas will lead Great Britain’s team at the UCI Road World Championships later this month.

The 2018 yellow jersey winner will compete in both the elite men’s road race and the time trial, the latter alongside British time trial champion Alex Dowsett, in Yorkshire.

Thomas will be joined in the road race event by Ben Swift, winner of the British National Road Race Championships in Norwich in June, Ian Stannard, Owain Doull and Tao Geoghegan Hart.

“We have such a talent pool of elite men’s road riders in this country that final selection was quite tricky even though the course is so challenging,” said British Cycling’s elite men’s coach Matt Brammeier.

“Looking at the time trial, we have selected two very experienced time trial riders this year in G and Alex, both of whom suit the course and as such we can expect to see good performances from them both.

“G will then stick around to compete in the road race on the Sunday, and will no doubt be a valuable asset to the team in the final laps.

“Ben Swift has really stepped up again this year and has come back to his best since his injury.

“I know he can’t wait to get racing in front of his home crowd, and I think having that support will really spur on the whole team.”

Yorkshire’s rising star Tom Pidcock has recovered from horrific facial injuries after his crash at the Tour de l’Avenir a few weeks ago to be selected in the under-23 road race team.
