“YOU have two choices in life. You can either be a victim or a fighter and we have to fight”.

It may have only been a single line, but it was enough to convey precisely what the mindset of Town’s new manager was.

The powerful message emerged from Danny Cowley’s post-match comments following his opening FOOTBALL journalist George Elek believes Danny and Nicky Cowley will bring about changes to the way Town approach the game that will lead to an increase in the number of chances they create.

Town have struggled to create goalscoring opportunities so far this season, bagging just five goals in their opening eight games of the season in all competitions – two of which were penalties.

And while the side clearly need to find a way to get the ball into dangerous positions more from open play, the Cowleys’ innovative approach to set-pieces could serve them well.

Last summer England scored a lot of set-piece goals as they ran to the semi-finals of the World Cup, with national team manager Gareth Southgate, pictured, reportedly preparing his side by looking at NBA drills – and at Lincoln City’s approach.

Speaking on the Not The Top 20 podcast, Elek said: “They look like a team devoid of confidence, they look like a team who have effectively forgotten how to create chances to thing that sets him apart is that he seems to be a guy who is willing to be pretty inventive and pretty effective in working out methods of creating chances.

“You think back to even last summer when we read about Gareth Southgate spending time with the Cowleys talking about set-piece routines because they were so inventive and so ahead of the curve in terms of what they were getting their Lincoln team to do.

“So in that respect I think it’s a good fit even if we didn’t see the fruits of any of their labours so far on Sunday.”
