FRIENDS and family have paid tribute to a talented Huddersfield photographer who has died at the age of 48.

Father-of-two Richard Caufield is thought to have died in his sleep at the weekend, according to his family.

Martin Caufield, his older brother, called him a “very likeable lad” who adored his sons and was passionate about photography, chess and Formula One.

He said: “No time is a good time to go but at 48 years old and only a week before Christmas, this news feels terribly cruel – predominantly for his boys.”

Martin described his brother as a very caring and wonderful dad who had tried to enrich his children’s lives with “old-fashioned outdoor adventuring.”

He said it appeared that his brother had died in his sleep following recent and long-term health problems.

Friend John Hill, who played in the David Brown chess team with Mr Caufield, said: “I sat alongside Richard more times than I care to remember, and in a game which, as we know can cause high levels of stress and competitiveness, he was someone who always seemed to play for the love of the game, something I know he was trying to pass on to his children.”

Mr Caufield was well known for his love of ‘urban exploring’ which involved taking photographs inside derelict buildings such as disused mills and factories.

Vinny Tyrell, who shared his love of taking pictures, described Mr Caulfield as his “photography soul mate” who would be “hugely missed.”

Mr Tyrell shared his own photographs of Mr Caufield with the Examiner and on a Colne Valley Facebook page which had been set up by Mr Caufield.

One friend described Mr Caufield as a kind, thoughtful and very respectful man whose photography was widely admired.

Another described him as a ‘wonderfully talented’ photographer.

Many of Mr Caufield’s stunning photographs from across Huddersfield were shared on social media where they were enjoyed by thousands of people.

Funeral details are expected to be released in January.
