Giants aiming to follow Red Devils example

TOP FIVE FINISH POSSIBLE INSISTS INNES

- RUGBY LEAGUE

LAST season’s battle against relegation from the Betfred Super League is already a distance memory for the Huddersfield Giants.

After a season of poor displays and injury problems, the Claret and Gold headed into their final match of the campaign still uncertain of whether they would stay in the top flight.

That battle has spurred the club into action during the close season, with a group of impressive additions to their squad.

The biggest of which is NRL Grand Finalist Adain Sezer, who is set to be one of the stars of the new Super League season. But the Giants have also added Kenny Edwards, James Gavet, Ashton Golding and Owen Trout to a squad in which a glut of promising young players now have a season of top-flight rugby under their belts.

It all points towards a campaign of real promise. And although the Giants were in a relegation fight, they were only four wins off the play-offs last season.

And that has inspired Innes Senior to predict a charge for the playoffs this campaign, which kicks off on February 1 at Catalans Dragons.

“We are definitely aiming for the top five,” he told Serious About RL. “We don’t think it’s that out of reach.

“We saw what Salford did last season with their squad, and it has given us a bit of inspiration.

“Anyone can get up there and that’s what Salford proved last year, that’s what we’re aiming for. If we can get as far as the finals, that would be great, but we are aiming for the top five.

“The new signings have all got loud voices,” he added. “You can

tell they are all leaders as well. It’s been good for them to bring their experience from other clubs, they’re all really good players.

“They’ve all brought something new and been talking up about things we can do better and it’s good to have an outside view on that sort of thing.

“There are things we might not have noticed because we’ve been there for so long.

“I think we are already in a better place, but it’ll be hard to tell until we get into games how its really getting on.

“We’ve only been training so far, after those pre-season games, we’ll know where we are at but I’m more confident in this side to do better this year.”

Huddersfield-born Senior played eight games in 2018 and 18 last season, having started the campaign on loan at Workington Town.

“If I can get more than 17 games, push on and try and force my way into that side, then I’ll be happy”, he added.

“I’ve just got to make sure that when I come in, I play well in my spot and I keep it.”
