Club in call for fans to sleep under the stars

- By MARTIN SHAW martin.shaw@reachplc.com @MartinShawWRNS

TOWN fans will again be asked to sleep out for a night to raise money for charities helping the homeless and needy.

The Huddersfield Town Foundation is organising the third Big Sleep Out at the John Smith’s Stadium on March 6.

Building on the success of the past two years, the Town Foundation’s aim is to encourage 300 people to take part.

Last year more than 200 people braved the rain and the cold to raise more than £50,000, which has since been distributed to local charities including the Welcome Centre in Huddersfield and Batley Foodbank.

Those who have slept out in previous years include former club chairman Dean Hoyle and wife Janet, the vice-chancellor of the University of Huddersfield Prof Bob Cryan and the chief executive of Kirklees Council, Jacqui Gedman.

Participants are asked to fundraise at least £100 per person to take part in the event. All funds raised will continue to be distributed to local homeless causes in and around the Kirklees area.

Foundation fundraising co-ordinator Lisa Bottomley said: “The Huddersfield Town Foundation are thrilled to be delivering the third Big Sleep Out.

“While we cannot fully replicate the conditions of being homeless, this event goes some way to educating our community on the difficulties and reality of spending your nights on the streets.

“The level of support in previous years has been phenomenal and we have raised in excess of £100,000, which makes a huge difference across Kirklees.

“We want to encourage as many people as possible over the age of 13 to take part in the event, not limited to Huddersfield Town fans and supporters.” Brave participants will be kept warm throughout the night with hot drinks and snacks supplied by chefs from Town’s PPG Canalside training base.
