Sir Keir to visit while on leader campaign

-

“He was assaulted in his own home by the new boyfriend of an ex of his and suffered a fractured jaw and eye socket.

“That’s caused him severe difficulties. On this occasion when he was arrested another person came in and was causing difficulties and being very violent.

“He’s backed up against the wall and starts to feel the effects of posttraumatic stress.

“He was shutting down because of what he witnessed in the holding area.

“He was looking for an excuse to get away and asking to go to the toilet.

“The PC said: ‘Yes but I’ll go with you.’ He was feeling even more closed in and eventually police were not waiting around for him to give a sample.”

Magistrates banned Kolbaba, of Grayson Crest in Leeds, from driving for three years.

He must comply with a sixmonth community order including 10 rehabilitation activity days aimed at helping him address his issues.

Magistrates told him to pay £250 court costs and £90 victim surcharge.

LABOUR leadership hopeful Sir Keir Starmer will be in Batley today as part of his election campaign.

He is visiting the town at the invitation of his Labour colleague, Batley and Spen MP Tracy Brabin, who was among 89 colleagues who nominated him for the top job.

Sir Keir has also received the backing of Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman.

He will meet staff and parents at Foundations Nursery, and volunteers at Batley Food Bank, before heading to Batley Community Centre to speak with Labour supporters where he will outline his vision for the future of the Labour Party and answer questions about his policies and ideas.

Sir Keir is one of five candidates in the fight for the party leadership. The others are Lisa Nandy, Jess Phillips, Emily Thornberry and Rebecca Long-Bailey.

The Shadow Brexit Secretary wants to unite the Labour Party by promoting a fresh new model of politics to rebuild the trust of voters who turned away from Labour at the last election.

Ms Brabin, the Shadow Secretary of State for the Department of Digital, Media, Culture and Sport, was among the first MPs to back Sir Keir in the leadership race.

She said: “I’m backing him to be the next Labour leader because I’ve seen first-hand how he can rebuild the party after our devastating election result.

“He is extremely experienced after a distinguished legal career and during his years in Parliament, and his meticulous eye for detail is the best way to hold Boris Johnson to account.

“We need a strong, united Labour Party to hold this Government to account and regain the trust of voters who turned away from our policies at the last election.”
