Driver smashes into cars while fleeing from police
A CAR smashed into two others leaving one person injured after fleeing from police.
Police tried to stop the Ford Fiesta in the Kirkheaton area yesterday lunchtime.
But the driver failed to stop and sped off before smashing into a Toyota Yaris and Honda Civic at the junction of School Lane and Rectory Drive at about 12.28pm.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang before looking out to see the crashed cars and police already on the scene.
They also reported seeing armed police in the area too.
Another said they saw the crash, adding: “15 seconds later the police were there. I think they had been chasing somebody. Police got out and ran after someone. The ambulance turned up.”
One woman said an injured person was trapped in the Yaris.
She said she heard a ‘monumental bang’ and looked out of the window to see the two cars had collided.
The woman and a neighbour went to help but police were on the scene within seconds.
She said: The man in the silver car (Yaris) seemed in a bad way. I think they were chasing a car.”
The witness said the trapped man was freed by fire crews and treated by paramedics.
A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Police attended at the junction of School Lane and Rectory Drive at Kirkheaton at about 12.28pm following a collision between a Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and Honda Civic.
“Fire and ambulance services attended the scene and a road closure was put in place at the junction.
“A man in the Toyota Yaris suffered chest injuries which are not life threatening, and two males aged 29 and 40 from the Fiesta have been arrested on suspicion of drugs offences.
“The Fiesta had failed to stop for police very shortly before the collision took place.”
Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they were called by police and sent three ambulances and a rapid response vehicle.
