Flower power town takes on UK’s best
GREEN-FINGERED volunteers in Mirfield are celebrating a nomination to represent Yorkshire in the Britain in Bloom competition.
Mirfield wowed the judges with a clean sweep at the annual Yorkshire in Bloom competition in September.
Last year residents across the town spruced up grotspots and turned the streets into a riot of colour and were rewarded with a clutch of medals.
Now the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has revealed the 70 finalists vying to win the UK’s largest community gardening competition, with Mirfield representing
Yorkshire in the large town category.
Finalists will showcase their horticultural skills, community and environmental efforts.
Each will be visited by a pair of RHS judges in August as they vie for a medal, a category win and the top accolade, Champion of Champions.
Mirfield in Bloom led the way at the Yorkshire in Bloom awards with a gold medal for their volunteers who impressed the judges with their community spirit and togetherness.
In recognition of the effort, the town was awarded a Yorkshire in Bloom discretionary award for Best Large Community and businesses were winners of the Best Commercial Entry Supporting The
Community.
More than 140 organisations and individuals got together under the Mirfield in Bloom banner, led by a committee of eight.
One of the organisers, Christine Sykes, said: “The successes have made all the hard work worthwhile.
“We worked as a community to achieve this wonderful result.”
Preparations have begun for this year’s competition with bulbs and trees planted, hanging baskets ordered and bridges painted.
Entrants have until the end of the month to enter their business, neighbourhood or small open space into the competition.
