THORNENSIANS OLD RISH 14 15
RISHWORTHIANS went top of Yorkshire Two in what director of rugby Jon Bake described as ‘a brilliant win’.
Thornensians provided one of the toughest challenges of the season in this twice rearranged game in hand for the visitors. While at times it was a lacklustre performance, it was excellent defence and a bit of luck near the end which brought the win.
The luck came with 11 minutes left, a yellow card bringing a straightforward potential match-winning penalty for Thornensians.
Surprisingly the kick went wide and excellent game management by Rishworthians helped them see out the final minutes. After an even first 15 minutes Thornensians broke through with a converted try, but the visitors came back strongly and eventually a catch and drive was touched down by prop Phil Kershaw.
Fly-half Josh Kelly converted to level the scores and with the last act of the first half kicked a penalty to give his side a 10 – 7 lead.
Thornensians opened the second half strongly until a missed tackle brought a converted try.
Rishworthians fought back and fullback Luke Sutcliffe burst through and then battled his way to score wide out.
Rishworthians hardly dared watch when a penalty near the end was taken. Once missed, their resolve stiffened and they saw the game out.
